Data availability Statement Policy

Journal of Islamic and Law Studies is committed to strengthening transparency, verifiability, and responsible research practices.

Every manuscript accepted for publication must therefore contain a Data Availability Statement, including studies in which no new research data were generated.

Research Data

Research data may include, where relevant:

  • survey datasets;
  • interview materials;
  • coded legal decisions;
  • court records;
  • archival collections;
  • statistical data;
  • field notes;
  • coding frameworks;
  • questionnaires;
  • research instruments;
  • analytical scripts;
  • supplementary legal materials; and
  • other materials supporting the findings of the article.

Authors are encouraged to deposit non-sensitive data in a trusted institutional, disciplinary, or general-purpose repository that provides persistent identifiers whenever appropriate.

Examples include Zenodo, OSF, Harvard Dataverse, institutional repositories, and appropriate discipline-specific repositories.

Confidential, Sensitive, or Restricted Data

The journal recognizes that not all data can or should be made publicly available.

Restrictions may be necessary because of:

  • participant confidentiality;
  • personal data protection;
  • research ethics requirements;
  • court confidentiality;
  • legal restrictions;
  • third-party ownership;
  • indigenous or community rights;
  • culturally or religiously sensitive information; or
  • legitimate security concerns.

Where data cannot be publicly shared, authors must explain the reason in the Data Availability Statement.

Examples

Publicly available data:
“The data supporting the findings of this study are available in [Repository Name] at [DOI or persistent link].”

Available upon reasonable request:
“The data supporting the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request, subject to applicable ethical and confidentiality restrictions.”

Restricted data:
“The research data are not publicly available because they contain confidential participant information. Access may be considered subject to ethical approval and applicable data protection requirements.”

No new data:
“No new data were generated or analyzed in support of this research.”

Authors must not fabricate data availability claims.

The editorial team may request supporting research materials when necessary to evaluate the integrity of a submission.
